Welcome!
Welcome to Hometown Pilgrims!
This was one of the projects that I planned on doing as part of my public educational outreach, but it was put on the back burner for over a year.
Church history and the history of religion more broadly have been some of my favorite subjects in ministry school.
Portland, Oregon, and its vicinity have become one of the most secular metropolitan areas in the United States. Yet, not so long ago, it was also a bastion of Evangelical Protestantism. In addition, the Portland area has been home to several fringe sects (perhaps the most infamous of which was the Rajneesh organization, which became a subject of Netflix's documentary series a few years ago), as well as other world religions.
This blog hopes to help readers discover the history of religion in the Pacific Northwest in their own hometown as they walk through their neighborhoods or drive past historical buildings.
